William "Dock Bell" Daniels was born on July 27, 1892, Pike County, Kentucky, the son of William Daniels (1844-1899) and Mary McCoy (1848-1939). Dock was a farmer and a driller in the coal mines. He married Lona "Loney" Clay in 1912 in Mingo County, West Virginia.
On April 25, 1938, Dock was at his mother's, Mary McCoy Daniels, plowing the field for corn. His mother fixed lunch and Dock came in to eat. Afterwards, he was sitting on the porch while the mule ate. Frank Ferrell walked up to Dock on the porch and shot him seven times. Mary ran out of the kitchen, screaming. Frank Ferrell then turned the gun on Mary but there were no bullets left. Melvin Duckworth, a hired hand and Perry Daniels' ex-wife's husband, came down to tell Frank Daniels, Dock's brother, about it. They lived down the road. Frank and his daughter came but the sheriff, Red Dotson, never showed up. Red Dotson was also a cousin. Frank Ferrell turned himself in to Red Dotson and he was taken to Pikeville before the Daniels family got him. He got natural life in the state penitentiary but only served eight years.
Dock passed away on April 25, 1938 and was laid to rest in the Daniels Family Cemetery, Freeburn, Kentucky.
