Little Bertha Pauline died at the home of her grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Richard Tinkham, because her mother, Bertha May Stopher/Tinkham had died seven months before. This is a mystery because baby Pauline was listed as the daughter of Thomas Stopher on the tombstone of the Tinkham family. There were no divorce papers for her mother Bertha Stopher Tinkham however, she is buried with her little daughter as Bertha May Tinkham. The obituary for little Bertha Pauline says, "Died Monday morning, Aug. 25, the infant daughter of Thomas Stopher at the home of it's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Tinkham." The obituary for her mother, Bertha May Stopher/Tinkham says: "Mrs. Thos. Stopher, nee Tinkham died of consumption in Mingo County last week and was brought here and interred at Ebenezer. She leaves a husband and six small children. Bertha May was the illigetimate daughter of Sarah Steele. And to add to the confusion, Sarah Steele was also an illigetimate child.
