Charles served in WWI, stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco with the U.S. Army. In 1920 he was living with his brother Clem Stopher in Flathead, Montana. Clem was a prospector and worked in a mine and Charles worked as an auto mechanic.
He married Margaret Varner and had a daughter, Mary Lou Stopher, a patient at a sanitarium in 1955. The daughter who was mentioned as Mrs. Harry Gleason of San Jose, California, in Margaret's obituary
