John (Bauer) Bowers was born in Schweix, Bavaria and emigrated to Pendleton, NY with his parents Joseph and Barbara (Bauer) Bower and three brothers in the spring of 1844. He married Elizabeth Spoth, daughter of Simon Spoth. They had eight children. They lived in the Beach Ridge area of Niagara county before purchasing a portion of the Terry estate, which is now known as Terry's Corners in the Chestnut Ridge area of Niagara county where he lived until his death in 1910. There is some uncertainty as to John's last name. Some sources and newspaper articles show Bowers and some show Bower. The Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery records show Bowers but the headstone shows Bower. His children continued the tradition, some used the name Bower and some used the name Bowers. He is mentioned in the book "Landmarks of Niagara" published in 1897, with many typo's in his children's names.
