Nicholas emigrated from Schweix, Ger. with his parents and three brothers to Pendleton, NY.in the spring of 1844. They purchased 65 acres on the northwest corner of Transit and Dunnigan Rd.'s. Nicholas enlisted in the 19th New York Independent Light Artillery in October, 1862 and was medically discharged due to an injury incurred during artillery training at Camp Barry, Washington D.C. in April 1863. He returned to the Bower family farm in Pendleton, which he inherited when his father Joseph died. He married Christine Hagenmeir and they had 6 children. The family farmhouse burned in 1901 and the family purchased a house on W. High St. just off Transit Rd. in Lockport. With Nicholas' Civil War disability income and the income from the farm in Pendleton they purchased several homes on W. High St. and eventually settled at 19 W. High St. which remained in the family until the late 1990's and is now the site of a drug store.
