Pioneer Ottumwa Builder is Dead
George W. Ferguson, 81, Had Part in Many Local Projects; Was City Inspector
George W. Ferguson, 81, pioneer Ottumwa carpenter, and builder died at his home, 809 Jay street, at 2 a. m. today. He had been ill for the last seven weeks.
A charter member of the carpenters’ union, local No. 767, Mr. Ferguson had been connected with the construction of the Wappello county courthouse, the Elks building, the Ballingall hotel and the building housing Hall’s candy factory.
Mr. Ferguson was born in Hannibal, Mo,, March 1, 1856, the son of Robert and Susie Ferguson. He came to Ottumwa in 1878 and has lived here since. He was the oldest member of the local carpenters’ union.
For two terms, prior to sixteen years ago, Mr. Ferguson was building inspector of the city.
Surviving are his wife, Ida B. Ferguson; three daughters, Mrs. Emma Terrell and Mrs. Olive Hobbs of Ottumwa and Mrs. Roy M. Schlaf of Galesburg, Ill., and three sons, Jess G., R. J. And Roy Ferguson, all of Ottumwa.
Funeral services will be held at the Leester Jay funeral home Monday at 2 p. m. conducted by the Rev. Robert W. Wsick, pastor of the Wesley Methodist Episcopal church. Burial will be made in the Ottumwa cemetery.
