January 26, 2010

Mrs. Adell Dodd of Marshall passed away quietly on Jan. 22, 2010, at Marshall Manor Nursing Home.

She is survived by her son, Jack Stevens and wife Sharee Stevens; daughter, Carolyn and husband Wesley Smith and daughter, Wanda and husband Danny Barrett, all of Marshall; sisters, JoAnn Sims of Friendship, Ark., and Hazel Langston of Little Rock, Ark.; grandchildren, Bonnie and Bob Mohr, Jack and Johnnie Stevens and Dannita Barrett and Roger Lyons, all of Marshall, Donna and Cliff Poimbouef and Becky and Bob Massey, all of Shreveport, La., Jeff and Alicia Barrett of Diana, Lisa and Jarrett Anderson of Fort Worth; great-grandchildren, Todd Liston, Candice Richardson, Anna Mohr, Connor Barrett, Grace Poimboeuf, Alec Barrett, Aiden Anderson, Eli Anderson and Tyler Massey; great-great-grandchild, Cameron Liston; many nieces and nephews, and her family and friends at Summit United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Dodd was born in Bismark, Ark. on June 23, 1920. She married at 16. Her husband and children moved from Arkansas to other areas of the South and finally to Texas. As did many other women of this era she endured the hardships of the depression, WWII and the wars that followed and hard work but never became hardened by these trials. She was always a "Lady" even when wielding a shovel, chasing the lawn mower or rescuing the cat by climbing a swing. She was happiest working in her yard surrounded by flowers, trees, birds and work to be done, visiting with friends especially dinners out with the "Drifters" or at Sunday and holiday dinners with her family.

She was formerly employed in the retail store of Fig-O-Bakery and later at Mrs. Baird's Bakery. She enjoyed quilting, her cat, Kitty Tom, her many Dogwood trees, her Church family and most of all meeting any challenge that came her way. She will be missed by the many friends she met along the way.

Mrs. Dodd was preceded in death by her first husband, Andrew Stevens; her husband and friend, Cleveland Dodd; son, Billy (Buddy) Stevens; mother, Bertie Sperlin Ledbetter; father, William Edgar Ledbetter; brothers, Coy, Eugene and Billy Joe Ledbetter; sister, Sue Norwood; and her great-great-granddaughter, Colbee Lynn Richardson.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dodd will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at Summit United Methodist Church in Marshall with the Rev. Mario Parga officiating. Interment will follow in Colonial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Downs Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be W.C. Williams, Felton Eldridge, Bob Galvan, Bobby Hester, M. O. LaGrone, Benny Franks and the Summit United Methodist Church family. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Marshall Manor Rehab and Marshall Manor Home Health and Hospice. Memorials may be made to Summit United Methodist Church.
