George Fredrick Larkin was the son of Frank Larkin and Catherine Mallett Larkin. He was born in Hunts Hill ("Gouge Eye") that straddled the border of Nevada and Placer Counties (which no longer exists). He also lived in Banta, Snelling, and Hayward, California. (Birth date was calculated from cemetery records, which indicate that he was 50 years, 11 months, and 16 days old when he died from pneumonia.)

The 1880 Census for Snelling, Merced County, California showed he was 16 and living with his parents at the time and that he had epilepsy.

According to the Native Daughters of the Golden West Pioneer Roster, he was an invalid and was educated at home.

The 1910 Census showed he was living in Glen Ellen, California at the Sonoma State Home as an "inmate" at that time. George was admitted to the Sonoma State Home February 12, 1910. He was brought to the home by his sister, Katherine Cassity.
