Orval Lester Stevens was born 1 September 1899 (was not listed on the 1900 Federal Census with his family?) in Tangier, Parke County, Indiana. His parents were Leonard Coyer and Ida Jane Hatt Stevens.

There were four siblings in the family and one sister who had died prior to 1900. Siblings were Joseph Earl, Cecil Coyer, Sophia Esther Stevens (Scott), and Clyde Ingram Stevens.

Orval married his first wife, Deloris Vandora Thousand on 3 July 1920 in Fulton County, Illinois. There was one daughter born of their union, Vera Vandora. They were divorced before the birth of Vera or shortly thereafter as Deloris remarried by 1925.

Orval was listed as being in the Army when his father died in 1925, but left the Army to take care of his mother, Ida. Ida remarried in 1929 and Orval married Mollie Thelma Jenkins 13 March 1929 in Doddridge County, West Virginia.

There were six children born of their union, four living and two deceased. Cecil Lewis "Sonny" Stevens died 19 October 1989 in Tarrant County, Texas and Donald Lester Stevens died 28 September 1973 in Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia.
