Sophia Esther Stevens was born on 9 February 1896 in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana to Leonard Coyer and Ida Jane Hatt Stevens. She was the only living daughter and she had four brother, Joseph Earl, Cecil Coyer, Clyde Ingram and Orval Lester.

She married John Reuben Scott on 10 January 1914 in Jackson, Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The moved to Piggott, Clay County, Arkansas where their only son, Earl Sylvester Scott was born on 22 February 1915. In the fall of 1916, Sophia Esther being very ill left Arkansas to visit her parents in Farmington, Fulton County, Illinois. On 30 August 1916, Sophia Esther Stevens Scott died of the dreaded diease called the "white plague," tuberculosis. she was buried on 31 August 1916 in the Farmington Cemetery. There is no tombstone to mark her grave.

In ca 1951/52 we traveled to Farmington to see if we could learn where she was buried. There was a man by the name of Bulter who took us to this cemetery and told us she was buried near one of the inner roads in the cemetery, near where a little building use to be before it was burned. He had been a pallbearer at her funeral. He told us that all the records for this cemetery had been destroyed.

CANTON DAILY LEDGER, Thursday, August 31, 1916 (Page 4): "FARMINGTON WOMAN WHITE PLAGUE VICTIM"----"Mrs. Esther Stevens Scott at Rest After Months of Hopeless Suffering."---"Farmington, Aug 31.---Mrs. Esther Stevens Scott died at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, at the home of her father, Leonard S (should be C) Stevens, south of Farmington, after prolonged illness of tuberculosis.

She was born February 9, 1886 (should be 1896), in Indiana, and the family came to Peoria about two years ago, removing later to near Farmington. She was married to Reuben Scott in 1914, and he and one son, Earl S., survive. There are also four brothers and the parents.

The funeral was held at 2 o'clock this afternoon and burial was in the Farmington cemetery.
