Clora Marie was born Clora Marie Gee, daughter of David Thomas and Minnie Mae Darden Gee. Her mother was Choctaw Indian and, at the time, inter-racial marriages were not accepted. After the death of David in 1922, Minnie and the children were not accepted by the Gee family and they decided to make the almost impossible trek to California. They changed their last name to McGee to disassociate themselves from the Gee family. Minnie's brother, William Darden was my grandfather and she and her daughters often visited in my grandmother's home.
