Iva was the daughter of David Thomas Gee and Minnie Mae Darden Gee. When her dad died in 1922 at the age of 34, Minnie and her family left Oklahoma and headed to California. They camped on the side of the road (as did other families) and slept under the car. When there was no money for fuel or food, they would stop at towns along the way and work until they had enough money to continue on their way. They left Oklahoma in order to leave behind David's family who did not approve of his Indian wife. They felt so unloved by that family that once in California, they changed their last name to McGee.
