Hiram was born Francis Hiram GEE to David and Minnie Gee in Oklahoma. Because of ill treatment by the grandfather (who died only five months later!) after David's death, the family changed their name from Gee to McGee.∼Hiram, his mother, Minnie Darden Gee, his brother and his sisters left Oklahoma after the death of his father, David Thomas Gee. After his father's death, the family was very ill-treated by the Gee grandfather and the family changed their last name to "McGee" in order to sever ties with the Gee family. Francis is buried in the same cemetery with his mother, both under the name of McGee. Minnie was my grandfather's sister (William M. Darden). Although she lived in California, she and her daughters came to Texas several times to visit Pearl Darden, her sister-in-law and my grandmother. We never had occasion to meet Francis Hiram.
