Pioneer Was One of Original Members of Surveying Board in City.
Benjamin N. Woodson, 74 years old, an ‘89er, attorney, county judge, newspaperman and a colorful citizen of the state's early days, died at his home, 1600 W. 35th street, Thursday night.
Woodson first became known to the old timers of the city when he made the run here in '89, leaving Fannin county, Texas, where he was county attorney, to do so. Woodson became widely known from the fact that he was at that time appointed as the Texas representative on the townsite board of trustees. The fourteen members of the board adjusted titles, surveyed the city and in general supervised the city's affairs.
Woodson remained in the city until 1898 when he made the run in Kay county. He was appointed as the first probate judge of that county and remained there four years.
The opening of the Kiowa-Comanche strip in 1901 called Woodson and he moved to Hobart and took up the practice of law. He was there until 1910. During the intervening years he served one term as the state senator in his district.
Woodson moved to Altus in 1910 where he was elected county judge and retired from the practice of law and entered the newspaper business and became associated with the Walter's New ‘Era, with which paper he remained until retiring in 1919. He returned to the city more than a year ago and took up his residence.
