Mrs. Ellen Thomas Dead

Mrs. Ellen Maria Thomas died Tuesday afternoon at 5 o'clock at her home in the Cottonwood neighborhood, after a long illness, the immediate cause of her death having been heart and kidney trouble. Mrs. Thomas was born in Brownsville, Pa., a daughter of Dorsey and Martha Teverbaugh Overturff. The family moved to Van Buren county, Iowa, in 1852, and there grew to womanhood. She was married November 11, 1869, to Harvey Thomas, of Emporia, and came a bride to what ever since has been her home community. She had lived on a farm on which she died, a mile northwest of the Cottonwood Friends church for more than 50 years. She was the last survivor of a family of 11 children. Mr. Thomas, who came with his parents to Lyon county in 1857, died in 1911.

Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas, the three surviving being Logan I. Thomas and Miss Laura Thomas, of the home, and Mrs. S.N. Parker, 422 West Eight, Emporia. A son, Roy W. Thomas, and a daughter, Minta are dead. There are five grandsons and one great-granddaughter. Mrs. Thomas was reared in the United Presbyterian church, was a member of that organization at Plymouth until its removal to Emporia. She had not been off the home farm for 17 years, and had been confined to the house seven years. Funeral services will be held in the Roberts-Blue chapel Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.C. Brogan, of the Grace Methodist church. Interment will be in Maplewood cemetery.
