Jacob was born in Fayette Co., PA, moved to Brownsville, PA with his family about 1846, and moved to Van Buren Co., IA with his family in 1852. He served in Co. H 5th IA infantry in the Civil War, was wounded at Iuka and discharged 19 Jan 1863. On 28 Nov 1865 he married his second wife, Sarah Josephine Walker, daughter of Lydia A. Thomas and Zachariah Walker. Jacob owned and operated the ferry at Selma.
