HARVEY THOMAS DEAD

Harvey Thomas, one of the oldest settlers of Lyon County, died last night at 10:30 at his home, seven miles northwest of Emporia, after a lingering illness. John Harvey Thomas was born March 7, 1841 in Champaign County, Ohio and lived there with his father, Ross Thomas, until 1858, when the family moved to Kansas and located in Lyon County. Upon their arrival in Emporia, the family immediately staked out a claim west of town on the Cottonwood River, but later sold it and moved to the present home where the Thomases have lived for the past forty years. Their first farm was sold to the Patty family and became noted over the county because of Patty's Mill, which was located on it.

In 1866 Harvey Thomas was married to Miss Helen Overturf at her farm in VanBuren County, Iowa, and is survived by her and four children. They are: Miss Della Thomas, of Kansas City; R. W. Thomas, who lives west of Emporia; Logan Thomas and Miss Laura Thomas, who live at home. Besides the immediate family, he leaves one sister, Mrs. Jabin Johnson, of Cottonwood Falls, two brothers, W. C. Thomas and L. M. Thomas, of Los Angeles, Calif., and a step-mother, Mrs. Ross Thomas, of Emporia. Mr. Thomas was a member of Company C, Eleventh Kansas Volunteers, and had been a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge for the past thirty years.

The funeral services will be held from the home tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. B. Mackenzie, of the Grace M. E. Church. The interment will be made in Maplewood cemetery and the Odd Fellows will have charge of the services at the grave.
