Mrs. Grace Newsome Overturff, age 93, died Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility after a very brief stay of only two hours. She was the last living child of John Heyward and Mary Jane Hagan Wells. She was a member of the Statesboro First Baptist Church and although she wasn't able to attend in person over the past few years, she watched the Sunday services each week on channel two. It was a great blessing to her.

Granny Grace, as she was affectionately called, loved music, flowers, and people. She especially enjoyed sitting on the front porch and listening to the birds sing and watching cars and people pass by. She was greatly blessed by a Thursday prayer luncheon held in her home weekly, where all the attendees would lovingly and prayerfully shower her with love and appreciation. This brought her great joy! Also, the cards and visits by the First Baptist Senior Adult Care Group meant very much to her.

Survivors include three daughters and one step son, Martha Ann Bird and John Edwards of Kingsland, Ga., Lynn and Larry Hubbard and Kathy and Gil Riggs, all of Statesboro, and Martin and Connie Newsome of Millen; several grandchildren, great grandchildren; two great- great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Olivia Smith Newsome; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one grandson.

There are several special friends who were of great encouragement to her during her last few years, Ethel Lane, Betty Law, and Gloria Baldwin. She was blessed to love and be loved by many, many people, but one special friend of whom she thought of as a daughter, is Charlaine Tucker Clutter, who was among the friends and family members with her as she departed this life.

The funeral service was held Friday at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home with Rev. Hubert Tankersley officiating.
Active pallbearers were Darryl Jones, DeWayne Grice, Jerry Newsome, Lavon Newsome, Terry Newsome and F.M. Jones.

The family is very grateful to the Ogeechee Area Hospice facility with all their loving and caring staff. We are so fortunate, as a community, to have this facility available to us.

Thanks be to God who gives us victory through Jesus Christ our Lord!
