Flenia Magdalene Blakley, 83, was born Aug. 28, 1924, in Cement, Okla, to Stephen H. and Lacy Ona (Clift) Salyer and passed from this life on Monday, April 21, 2008, in Anadarko following a lengthly illness.

Flenia lived in Cement, Chickasha, Cogar and several other towns before the family moved to Binger, where she graduated from high school in 1941. She married Vernon "Heavy" Blackburn on Nov. 1, 1941 in Anadarko. He preceded her in death on May 1, 1982.

She attended Chickasha Beauty College and received her cosmetology license in 1942. She worked at the Fashionette for a while, and then owned and operated her own shops, including The Palace Beauty Salon, which she had for 31 years. She went back to Chickasha Beauty School in 1969 and got her instructors license. She taught there for a while before going back to her own shop. She also taught several seminars on hair and skin care at Riverside Indian School. She kept her license current and had the oldest active cosmetology license in the state. After she retired from hairdressing, she was an area director for Green Thumb for eight years. She also worked for Caddo County Assessor Frank Bryson for two years.

On Sept. 30, 1983, Flenia and Clyde Blakley were married. They have enjoyed traveling and camping, and have been all over the United States. Flenia was baptised at the age of 13, and had been a member of Bethel Baptist for many years. She was also a member of the Anadarko Chamberettes, and was asked to sing at many funerals. She was a member of the Delphian Club, and the Anadarko Hospital Auxiliary. She loved taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her parents, brother Forrest Salyer and sister Fernia, and two infant siblings also preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband Clyde of Anadarko; one son, Danny Blackburn of Oklahoma City; one daughter, Vonda Neal of Anadarko; grandchildlren, Jemma Stemmons and husband Scott of Oklahoma City, and Matt Neal and wife Renate' of Norman; great-grandchildren, Abigail Stemmons, Drew, Blake and Bradly Neal, and another Stemmons baby on the way; three brothers, Foy Salyer and wife Colleen of Loveland, Colo., Farrel Salyer and wife Connie of Goodfield, Ill, and Freeman Salyer of Cyril, Okla; two sisters, Freda Burd and husband Lloyd of Amarillo, Texas, and Florieta Ann Davis of Deercreek, Ill; numerous nieces and nephews including a special niece, Starla McCulloch of Shawnee, who lived with Flenia and "Heavy" in the summers while she was growing up; also many cousin, other relatives and many loving friends.

Viewing will be 9 am until noon today. Funeral service will be 2 pm today at Bethel Baptist Church with the pastor, Bro. Ray Weathers, Dr. Bill Fowler, and the Rev. Lloyd Burd (Ret.) officiating. Burial will be in Memory Lane Cemetery under the direction of Steverson Funeral Home, Anadarko. Condolences may be sent to the family via e-mail to [email protected].
