George Houk Dies; Was A Veteran Farmer
George C. Houk, 77, died at his home 222 N. Davis St., at 2:55 PM Tuesday. He was the son of Elisah and Nancy Elkins Houk and was born in Davis County July 17, 1869. He has lived in Davis and Wapello counties all his life and Ottumwa for the past six years. He was married to Sophrona Mary Overturf December 24, 1892. Surviving are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Laura Gayer, Mrs. Cleora Kirk, and Mrs. Edna Gruwell, all of Ottumwa; one son George Olin Houk of Ottumwa; a nephew, Carrie Overturf, who was reared in the home; four brothers, John, Adam, Bert and Ben, all of Ottumwa; three sisters, Mrs. Clara Davis Stocker, Mrs. Mattie Bennett and Mrs. Myra Coleman, all of Ottumwa; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Elzie and William, two sisters and three grandchildren. He was a member of the A. F. & A. M. Lodge No. 16. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 PM at the Johnson funeral home in charge of the Rev. Luther Childs of Centerville and assisted by the Rev. Roscoe Morrison. The body will be taken to the residence Thursday at 10 AM and will be returned to the Johnson funeral home Friday morning. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Masonic services will be held at the grave. Pallbearers for the service will be Kenneth Smith, Carrie Hunt, Charlie Overturf, Clarence King, Lon Gruwell and Max Berry
