Josh Morrison kept a general supply store in the Big Salt Lake area, sowtheast of Portales Springs. According to Mrs. Lurline (Paul) Morrison, whose husband was the son of "Uncle Josh", the store catered to the DZ ranch headquarters trade and also to the wagons which followed the trail by the spring from Lubbock toward Ft. Sumner. In 1898 when the railroad was built up from Roswell and trade shifted to the tent settlement which has sprung up near the tracks, Morrison then lifted his shed of a store on skids, secured by a chain to his wagon, and relocated it to become the first businessman in the new town of Portales. Moving the store was not hard to do as it was necessarily small and flimsy construction; "no bigger than a shirt-tail" is the way Clint Fairly described it.
