Funeral rites for Mrs. Lillie Vesta Ballew, 68, will be conducted Thursday [May 9, 1957] at 10am in the Blackburn-Shaw Memorial Chapel. Dr. Carl E. Bates, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate. Graveside services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. in the Littlefield Cemetery. Mrs. Ballew, a resident of Amarillo for 30 years and a member of First Baptist Church, died Tuesday [May 7] at 3:20 p.m. at home, 2013 Milam.

Mrs. Ballew was born in Ellis County, Texas. As a girl, she lived in Guy, Texas and survived the 1900 Galveston Hurricane; her parents' home was one of three left standing in their town the next day. During her lifetime Mrs. Ballew also lived in Clarendon, Amarillo, Needville, Littlefield, and Portland, Oregon.

Mrs. Ballew was preceeded in death by her parents, Robert M. Marshall and Susan Alice Wells Marshall; and brothers William Featherstone Marshall and John Clinton Marshall.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Louis [Aileen] Vigna, Amarillo; a son, Hollis Ballew, Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Mrs. Roy [Mary Lula] McQuatters, Littlefield, and Mrs. Fred [Ora Bell] Trantow, Alvin, Tex.; and two granddaughters, Phyllis Vigna and Barbara Ballew.

Gravesite Details

While Lillie's name has been shown in documents alternately as "Lillie" and "Lilly," a Family Record written in her mother's hand shows her name as "Lillie." Which matches the headstone, purchased by Aileen and Hollis.
