Yes, we buried our father that day at 2pm but, the smile that was on his face told us he wasn't sick anymore, he was at peace and we all knew of course, he was in Heaven.
I've posted so many pictures of my father's family on his memorial because he was just that, a family man. He lead by example, supported his family, loved to fish for crappie on Mercer Bayou, he took us every Sunday after church to the farm in Fouke, Arkansas (where he grew up) to visit his parents and siblings. He loved watching professional baseball, Ted Williams was his favorite. He also loved the music of Hank Williams, Sr. therefore, we played "I Saw The Light" by Hank, Sr. at his funeral. He would stand up in our living area at our home and give us "free" concerts singing Hank, Sr. songs, especially when my friends came over:) Daddy was so tall, 6'5" and some of my friends would say, "I'm scared of your dad!" But, as soon as the concert started he had us all laughing and giggling.
He worked at the T & P Railroad downtown Texarkana as a mail handler with his father for 27 years, all while maintaining the full-time farm in Fouke until they were all laid off. After that he worked as a supervisor for the City of Texarkana, Arkansas for 21 years until the age of 65, retiring from both places. He was the meaning of a family man, he was "old school" and frugal, had money but didn't spend it. He was so loving if someone was sick or hurting, he would go out of his way to help. My husband and I built our new home behind my parents home just to be close to him. He would go fishing real early in the morning, come home and filet the crappie and hand them over the back fence to us. We haven't had fresh crappie like that since he went to Heaven in 2009. I remember how worried he was when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 42, he didn't say much but, I could see it on his face. I was so blessed to have a father like him, never judging, always kind to everyone and I am grateful for that. As I am such a spiritual person, I feel him in my heart, in nature, at my home, everywhere I am he is also. I draw strength and peace from his spirit, daily. God has truly made a way for me in this often cruel world. It goes without saying he was a man of integrity, God knew just what we needed and He gave us this wonderful man. Rest in peace sweet daddy.
