Johnny, as he was called, was the son of Florida Sweat and Silas Thompson. He as a welder for several years at the ship yards in Jacksonville, FL, until the age of about 40 when he started to go deaf and blind from job-related issues. He was married once for a short time (Francis), but no children. No one remembers her maiden name and no record of marriage can be located. No longer able to care for himself, he lived with one of his siblings after going blind. A chain smoker, Johnny died of lung cancer. According to Social Security Death Index, his birthday was August 24th, but State of Florida Death record shows August 10th and that is the day he celebrated.
