Desso was the son of Florida Sweat and Silas Thompson. After a serious bout with the measles, he attended the Florida Deaf and Blind School in St. Augustine. In 1916 while his family was in south GA, several of his siblings were removed from his parents care and later placed in foster homes. He was not removed from his parent's home because an older brother Willie fled south on the railroad tracks with him to their grandparents' home just across the river in Florida.

He lived with his brother Willie for many year, and after Willie's death, he lived with his brother Jack.
