Tom never married and devoted his life to taking care of his mother. Tom and his brother, Dee, were killed on April 9, 1947, at Glazier, Hemphill County, Texas, when a tornado struck both Glazier and Higgins. The tornado killed 41 residents and virtually destroyed the town of Glazier. A list of those killed was published in an account of the tornado damage appearing in the Canadian Record 10 April 1947.
