Even before her husband's death, Nancy was listed as head of household on the 1850 census. One assumes he was already ill. After his death, she took charge of the farming operation and was quite successful in that area. Several of her sons became merchants at one time or another, some becoming quite successful and others staying or returning to the farm. Nancy was a smart business woman and accumulated a good sized farming operation. After Lemuel's death, as the children came of age they were offered a share in the farm or $1,000 to buy out their share. Most of the children took the money, and most of them did very well with the businesses they started using that money. Some of the boys went into the mercantile business and were successful in both AL and TX. the girls received the same $1,000 as they married. Hard times just after the Civil War and the bad southern economy influenced several of them to move west.
