Carl Ray Franks

Carl Ray Franks, 69, of Fairmont went to be with the Lord on Saturday (Feb. 10, 2007) after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born March 14, 1937, in Keisterville, Pa., the son of the late Clarence W. and Ida Woodward Franks.

Carl worked for Fairmont Wall Plaster and also for Alcan Aluminum, from which he retired.

Carl enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, watching television, especially football and doing word-search puzzles. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with family, and attending his grandchildren's school programs, baseball, basketball and soccer games. He especially enjoyed getting to be here long enough to be able to meet and get to know his great-granddaughter, Jalyn Grace Jenkins.

Carl was a Methodist by faith and was a member of the Walnut Grove Church, where for many years he was a janitor and helped with various projects. As a child he was a Boy Scout. He also helped coach his son's baseball team. He was a great story-teller and liked to yodel for family listeners.

Carl is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Barbara Ann Jackson Franks; three children and their spouses: Carla Rae Shultz and her husband Jim of Blacksville, Todd Allen Franks and his wife Jennifer of Fairmont, and Veronica Marie McQuain and her husband Jamie of Fairmont; his grandchildren: Krista Jenkins of Greenville, S.C.; JD Jenkins of Honolulu, Hawaii; and Cheyann McQuain, Schuyler Franks, Kedra McQuain and Noah Franks, all of Fairmont; great-granddaughter Jalyn Grace Jenkins of Greenville, S.C.; two step-grandsons: Todd Shultz of Georgia and Aaron Shultz of Beckley; four sisters: Gwen Dailey of Montana Mines, Ruth LaFisca and her husband Mike of Worthington, Pa.; Marylin Riffee and her companion Ron Humphrey of Lake Milton, Ohio, and Earlene Roderick and her husband Raymond of Fairmont; two brothers: John Franks and his wife Carol of Newton Falls, Ohio, and Jim Franks and his wife Vickie of Evansville, Ind.; a brother-in-law, David Jackson and his wife Debbie of East Hampton, Conn.; sisters-in-law Fairy Franks of Fairmont and Betsy Franks of Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Franks, Edward Franks and Clarence "Sonny" Franks; and one sister, Retta Henson.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made instead to your choice of Peoples Hospice of Clarksburg, 718 W Pike Clarksburg, WV 26301; Walnut Grove Church, c/o Judy Tatterson at Route 4, Box 366, Fairmont, WV 26554; The American Cancer Society, Morgantown Office, 122 South High St., Morgantown, WV 26501; or Caring and Sharing Cancer Support Group, c/o Stella Hawk, RR #5, Box 170, Grafton, WV 26354.

Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today and 9-11a.m. Tuesday at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Jim Zinn officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens.
