John D. Franks, of Newton Falls, Ohio and formerly of Fairmont, passed on October 13, 2014 in University Hospital in Cleveland with his loving family by his side. John was born on September 9, 1941 in Keisterville, Pennsylvania, the son of Clarence and Ida Woodward Franks. At an early age, his family moved to West Virginia, which he always considered to be his home.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and was honorably discharged on December 16, 1963.
With his marriage to Carol Porter in 1962, the family grew to include their children, Sherry, John Jr., Richard and Michelle. Carol preceded John in 2007.
The family relocated to the Newton Falls area in 1970, when John obtained employment at the General Motors Fabrication Plant in Lordstown, Ohio.
John was a member of the VFW Post 3332, the American Legion 236, the Amvets 112, the Mecca Loyal Order of Moose, the American Rifle Association and the North American Fishing Club.
Favorite pastimes for John were coaching Little League, fishing, golfing, traveling and camping at Geneva on the Lake. He supported his favorite teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
John was a generous man with a big heart who put others before himself.
Wonderful memories of John will be carried on by his wife, Patricia A. Adair Franks, whom he married on September 27, 2011; his children, Sherry (Doug) Nalbach, John D. (Sandra) Franks, Jr., Richard L. (Debra Edwards) Franks and Michelle (Bob) Small and their children, Doug, Matthew, Richard, Brittney and J.D. III. With his marriage to Pat, the family grew to include Rebecca (Mark) Swift and Russell (Lisa) Adair, Jr. and their children, Kelley Adair, Russell Adair, III, Grant Swift and Taylor Swift and his siblings Earline Roderick, Marilyn Riffee and James (Vicki) Franks.
Also preceding John where his siblings, Gwen Dailey, Ruth LaFisca, Carl Ray Franks, Edward Franks, Clarence Franks and Reta Hinson.
Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St. Fairmont on Saturday from 12-1 pm. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 1 pm. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont where full military honors will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.
