Verlyn "Chief" Clark, age 80 of rural Viroqua, died Sunday July 6, 2003 at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua.

He was born in Monroe County on July 10, 1922 to Jay and Sylvia (Wallace) Clark. He was a graduate of Westby High School. He married Beulah Sneath on April 7, 1943. They moved to Hillsboro where they were engaged in farming and raising tobacco. After two years they moved to Vernon County where Verlyn continued to farm all of his adult life until their farm auction in February of 1991. Verlyn had a great love for animals especially whitetails. Along with farming he dehorned cattle for many area farmers. After retirement he worked for Dr. Jacob Veterinary Clinic and also worked at the Vernon County Fairgrounds. He was a member and served as a deacon of the Viroqua Church of Christ and also served as president and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2707 in Viroqua.

Verlyn is survived by his wife of 60 years, Beulah Clark; two daughters, Kay (Ken) Deaver of Viroqua and Joann (George) Edwards of La Crosse; a son, Vincent Bruce Clark of Fort Collins, Colorado; three grandchildren, Jeremiah Clark of Grand Junction, Colorado, Todd (Lisa) Deaver and Eric (Debbie) Deaver, all of Viroqua; five great-grandchildren, Katie, Tyler, Brent, Brynn and Britany Deaver, all of Viroqua; two sisters, Bonnie Fish of Westby and Betty (Bob) Suhr of Viroqua; and a brother, Garland Clark of Tomah.

Verlyn was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Orville; a brother-in-law, Mike Fish; and two sisters-in-law, Arlene Clark and Helen Clark.

Verlyn was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2003 at the Viroqua Church of Christ. Pastor James Kisner and Larry Mosher will officiate with burial in the Viola Cemetery. Friends may call at the Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and after 12:30 p.m. at the church on Thursday.
