He was born September 15, 1937, in Chickasha to Arthur Burges and Velma (Miller) Burges.
Leon worked 41 years as an educator, from 1961 to 2002. He taught at Stony Point, Cooperton, Middleberg and Amber-Pocasset and served as Grady County Superintendent of Schools. He liked golf, fishing, playing spades and was a big Red Sox, OU and Thunder fan. He loved spending the holidays with family and friends.
He loved being a Papa Leon.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Burges, of the home; two sons, Rod Burges and Scott Burges and wife Jana; daughter, Tiffanie Burges; grandson, Brawn Burges; sister, Ramona McGuire and husband Brad; two brothersin-law, Edward Fitzpatrick and Rick Fitzpatrick and wife Beth; aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and other loving family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister LaDonna Davis; and brother-in-law Gerald Fitzpatrick.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 21, at Southern Baptist Church of Rush Springs. Burial will follow in Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of John Ireland Funeral Home, Moore.
