Virgie Clower Bannister went to set at the feet of her Lord Jesus Christ Thursday, August 26, 2010 at the age of 93. She was born January 9, 1917 in Matador, TX to Herman Dennis "Shorty" Marshall and Jessie Ruth Sampson Marshall. She was the fourth child of seven.
Virgie grew up in the Tee Pee Flat community northeast of Roaring Springs, TX, and attended school there finishing the eighth grade. She then attended Roaring Springs High School where she was on the girls basketball team, winning district her junior year. In 1935 she graduated high school, which was always something that she was extremely proud of. After graduation she would stay with families needing help, either with a new born or with someone just needing assistance, being paid the grand sum of three dollars a week. In June 2010 she attended a school reunion celebrating her 75th year after graduating.
On June 17, 1937 she married a tall lanky cowboy from Matador, TX, by the name of Fred Clower. From this union two sons were born, Dahl in 1941 and Dwight in 1946. They lived in and around Matador and attended the First Baptist Church. Virgie drove a school bus for Matador Independent School District for a number of years. In 1955 the family moved to Plainview, TX, for better employment opportunities. Once in Plainview they joined the congregation at College Heights Baptist Church for 50 plus years. Virgie was employed at Sears-Roebuck & Company for over 20 years as department manager of the telephone sales, retiring in 1981.
Her husband Fred Clower passed away in 1983: she married Sam Bannister in 1985. The following years she got to travel to many European countries, Japan, China, and other Eastern countries, Hawaii, Alaska, and much of the Western United States. Sam passed away in 1994.
During her years of retirement she had a weekly ministry of calling on shut-ins and people in nursing homes taking tape recordings of church sermons. She was able to continue this until 2006, at which time she fell and broke her hip. In 2007 she moved back to Matador to reside at Hackberry Creek Care Center, spending many happy times visiting with relatives, friends, reading her Bible, working on crossword puzzles, and enjoying the wonderful staff at the center.
Virgie was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Fred Clower and her second husband Sam Bannister; sisters: Opal Fletcher and husband Newton, Fern Green and husband John, and Tressie Warren; brothers: W.H. "Buck" Marshall and wife Bessie Mae, Dennis Marshall, R.L. "Cotton" Marshall and wife Harriet; granddaughters: Treva Clower Gillespie and Emily Nicole Clower; great-granddaughter Kendel Holman.
She is survived by sons Dahl Clower and wife Delores of Amarillo, Texas, and Dwight Clower and wife Krista of Clovis, New Mexico, and a son by love, after losing his parents, John Wayne Mayes and his wife Gay of McKinney, Texas. Granddaughters: Kari Holman and husband Kris of Amarillo, Texas, Angela Stallings and husband Stan of Lubbock, Texas. Grandsons: Kevin Clower of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dyron Clower and wife Monti of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Cody Clower and wife Julie of McKinney, Texas. Also surviving are twelve great-grandchildren: Bryan, Jordan, and Jennifer Gillespie, Amber Ziegler, Kennedy, Danielle, and Hagan Clower, Kooper Holman, Caleb, Jaden, Noah and Isaac Clower. Plus many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 29, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m at the Hotel Matador.
Church Services will be held at 2:00 p.m Monday August 30, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Matador. Interment will be at East Mound Cemetery in Matador under the direction of Shannon Family Funeral Home of Matador.
