He was the son of John Forsythe Ailes (a farmer on Ailes Road in Shelby County) and Rebecca Lovina Drumm Ailes, a school teacher. He received a bachelor's degree and a law degree from Ohio Northern University, Ada, OH, about 1905. Started a secretarial business school in Cincinnati and later sold his half-interest to a partner, and entered medical school. Received an M.D. degree from The University of Cincinnati about 1912. Started a solo general practice in Garrettsville (N.E.Ohio), and was a Captain in the U.S.Army Medical Corps during World War 1. After military service he obtained a master's degree in Public Health from Harvard, and spent the rest of his career in Public Health. He didn't retire until age 75, at which time he had been Director of the Health Dept. for the city of Akron,OH & Summit County for about 30 years. He had 2 younger brothers, Arlington (also a physician, in Illinois) & Sidney and 1 younger sister, Helen Ailes Baker (both teachers in Shelby County). He married Sarah H. McMurray, & lated divorced. He remarried but had no children from the 2nd marriage. He was the father of John & Robert E. Ailes & Dorothy Ailes Pete. He died at age 84 of a presumed heart attack, but also suffered from Alzheimer's Disease.
