Alesa Maria (Lizzie) was born on the home place of her parents near Madison, Nebraska, on November 23, 1873. When a small child her mother would try to have fresh baked bread to give to the Indians so they wouldn't kidnap the baby that they seemed to admire. She attended the Meadow Grove German School through the third grade, when it then became her responsibility to herd the cattle. She had to be very careful while walking through the grass so not to step on a rattler. She would, when necessary kill the snakes and even pull them from their holes using her apron to wrap around her hand. A little girl with a big and sometimes dangerous task. While watching the cattle, she learned to play a "mean" Harmonica. This was not commonly known as she seemed to want to keep it a secret. At age 16, with help from her brother, Carl, she began working at a hotel in Madison. Two years later, she married Alfred Markley on February 10, 1891, at Nebraska City, Nebraska.

"A large and happy family and an unshakable belief in God are the two most important ingredients in life for Mrs. Alfred Markley. Alesa will be 87 but she still looks as bright and cheerful as she must have been that day 69 years ago when she and Alfred drove a hack from Minorsville to Nebraska City to be married, "I was wearing a blue dress trimmed with velvet and after we drove back to Minorsville, we made a big pan full of donuts and had a dance to celebrate our being half of a double wedding." For the first two years they lived on her brother's farm. Alfred father had given them two horses, a wagon, some harness and one cow. "We furnished our home for twenty-eight dollars", Mrs. Markley says with a twinkle in her eye. From there they moved to Minorsville, Nebraska where they bought a store. Mrs. Markley ran the store and post office and Mr. Markley farmed.
Their pioneering instinct was strong so made many moves from farms to stores, including a short stay on an Indian Reservation at Ponca City, Oklahoma and on a twenty acre fruit farm in Granger, Washington. However, each move was for the betterment of their family. In 1918, they moved to Weldona, Colorado, where they bought a small store for $12?00. With the help of their sons, this business flourished into a large mercantile store. Alfred and Alesa continued to operate this store until December, 1941, when ill health forced Mr. Markley to retire and move to Fort Morgan. They were able to celebrate sixty years of happily married life before Mr. Markley passed away in 1951. Alesa continued to live in her home until 1963. After a short illness, she passed away on January 8, 1964 in Greeley, Colorado. Both are buried in the cemetery at Fort Morgan, Colorado

Mrs. Lizzie Mary Markley, 90, a Fort Morgan resident for the past 41 years, died Wednesday afternoon in Greeley.

She is survived by four children, Mrs. Erma Jones of Arvada; Mrs. Lula Flack of Greeley, Houston of Loveland, Sever of Englewood. There are 14 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. from the Cutler-Jolliffe Chapel with Rev. F. L. McCormack officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery.
