Leonard Davis Shutes was the eldest child of Z. Taylor Shutes & Eldora Blanch Davis. He married (see photo) on 24 September 1902 at Tacoma, Washington, to Emma "Evelyn" Hileman (1883-1977), daughter of Samuel E. Hileman & Annie Mariah Kantz; 4 children:
Genevieve A. (1903-1997) married James Joel Bogart
Adrian Leonard (1906-1944)
twins Marjory May (1908-1989) and Ruth Estella (died young); Marjory married Luther Robinson
Leonard married second in 1916 to Hattie E. Sells (1880-1932), daughter of David Sells & Rachel McDonald; 1 daughter: Lucile Jessie (1917-1990); married Mr. Bowman

The 1910 census lists Len as a tapestry artist in Pittsburgh; the 1920 census calls him an automobile simonizer in Los Angeles.
On 12 September 1918, he registered for the military draft. He was 43, medium height, stout build, gray eyes, brown hair, an insurance agent for Prudential; living with wife Hattie E. at 153 N Vendome St, Los Angeles, California (the war ended two months later).
The 1926 San Francisco City Directory calls him a manufacturer, living with wife Hattie at 2479 Post Street.
When he died in 1936, he was living with his widowed mother in Tacoma, Washington.
