Stella was the second of three daughters of Z. Taylor Shutes & Eldora Blanch Davis. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and then taught in country schools in Hardin County, Iowa. In 1902 she moved with her parents to Tacoma, Washington. She became a milliner, creating fancy hats for ladies. She never married. She died following an appendicitis operation at age 25. She is buried near her parents and her two brothers, Leonard and Arthur.

Stella was especially close to her older sister Bertha---two years her senior. Stella was living with her parents in Tacoma, Washington, when she died in 1904. Bertha was living in Iowa with her husband Jack Dutton and their three small daughters, Ethel, Greta, and Lucille. The Dutton home had no telephone. When a black-bordered telegram was delivered to unsuspecting Bertha with the sad news, she took to her bed with grief.
