Enlisted on July 15, 1862 at Randolph County, North Carolina as a Private in the 5th North Carolina Infantry, Company I at the age of 32. Wounded on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. POW on May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia. Confined on May 15, 1864 at Point Lookout, Maryland. Transferred on August 3, 1864 at Elmira, New York. Died of disease as a POW.
