Major League Baseball Player. For seven seasons (1968 to 1974), he was a pitcher with the New York Mets and San Diego Padres. Born James Clement McAndrew, he attended Lost Nation High School in Iowa and later enrolled at the University of Iowa where he played collegiate basketball and baseball. Selected by the New York Mets during the 1965 MLB Amateur Draft, he made his Major League debut on July 21st, 1968. In 1969, he was part of a rotation which included Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan and Jerry Koosman who were key contributors to the New York Mets' winning of the World Series. In 1972, he produced a career-high 12 wins, and the following season (1973), he experienced a National League Pennant with the Mets. In 161 career regular season games, he compiled a 37 win, 53 loss record, with a lifetime 3.65 ERA, in 771 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, he worked in the coal industry.
