"Fred Walter, a retired grocer, died Monday night at Wadsworth, Kan., following a lengthy illness. He was 73 years old.

He made his home at 2813 Francis street and operated a grocery store for 22 years at 19th and Olive streets. He retired about 15 years ago. Mr. Walter was born in Shickley, Neb., but had resided in St Joseph more than 50 years.

He was a veteran of World War I and was a member of St Joseph's Co-Cathedral, Knights of Columbus St Joseph Council No. 571, and American Legion Post No. 11.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances A. Walter of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Holleran of Valley Springs, R.I., and Sister Mary Noel of Mount St Scholastica in Atchison, Kan.; a stepson, Albert J. Schmitz of Merrick, R.I.; four brothers, Philip Walter of Hastings, Neb., John Walter of Geneva, Neb., Jake Walter of Grafton, Neb., and Louis Walter of Strang, Neb.; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Rotter of Omaha, Neb., Mrs. Mary Schmitt of Lincoln, Neb., and Mrs. Katherine Jung of Rockford, Ill.; and 10 grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St Joseph's Co-Cathedral with Monsignor Charles S. Nowland officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery." St Joseph Gazette, March 16, 1966
