Melvah was the youngest daughter of Ernest Tinsley and Minnie (Hodge) Dameron. Her twin, Melvin, died in infancy at West Fork, Arkansas, and is buried there. Melvah attended the Eldorado Public Schools and graduated there.
Melvah was a telephone operator in Eldorado for many years, working for Southwestern Bell.
When her parents became too old to care for themselves, it was Melvah who stayed home to care for them. Following her father's death in 1957, she and her mother moved to Hobart. It was here that she met and married Ira L. Wood, a successful wheat farmer. Melvah and Ira spent many of their retirement years traveling all over the USA in their pickup camper.
