John had seven biological brothers and two biological sisters.
In May 1904 John and his siblings were placed in residential care at the Home for Destitute Catholic Children in Boston. On 26 Mar 1905, John was placed as an 8 year old foster child with James A and Myra Muldoon of Eastport, Maine. John was never formally adopted, but he took the name John Clarence Muldoon, which he used until the 1920's. He was the only known child of the Muldoon family, and his name and year of birth are included on their family cemetery marker.
John's foster mother, Myra Muldoon, died in 1911. He continued to reside with his foster father, and John graduated from the college prep course at Boynton High School (Eastport, Maine) in the Class of 1917. After his graduation he went to Easthampton, Maine, with his foster father's consent, to find work in the mills of the West Boylston Manufacturing Company. He registered for the draft in Easthampton, and enlisted in the US Marine Corps at Springfield, Massachussetts. He completed his boot camp training at Parris Island, South Carolina and was assigned to Company F, 11th Regiment. He served in France, and was honorably discharged on 14 Jul 1919 at Quantico, Virginia. After his service, he returned home to Eastport until the Spring of 1920. He found work in Boston, and made frequent trips back to Maine until the death of his foster father James A Muldoon in 1930.
In Boston, John reunited with his biological family and resumed using the surname Gatt. In 1940, with WW2 on the horizon, John asked to have his WW1 military record amended to reflect his legal name, John Clarence Gatt. That action preserved much of the information documented here.
John died on 20 June 1951, in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, at the age of 54, and was buried at Mount Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts on 23 Jun 1951.
