Walter James Gatt was born James Walter Gatt on July 16, 1888, in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, the son of James A. and Mary "Minnie" F (Murphy) Gatt. He was the eldest of 10 known siblings, having seven brothers and two sisters.

Walter, as he was known, worked as a boilermaker in the burgeoning oil industry in Northern and Southern California. He made his home in Martinez, Contra Costa, California and Taft, Kern, California.

He enlisted into the Army from Bakersfield, Kern, California. Walter served as a sergeant in the Army Engineering Corps in WWI. He died in combat on November 3, 1918, in Belgium at the age of 30. His remains were later repatriated to the United States, and final arrangements were attended to by Curtis undertakers of 387 Dudley St, Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts. A requiem mass was held at St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Roxbury at 9 am on 14 May 1921. He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

His name is included on the Kern Veterans Memorial in Bakersfield, Kern, California.
