Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A long time serving United States Army Officer, he commanded Fort Lafayette in the New York City Harbor, New York during the war. After the war started he first was Major of the 2nd United States Regular Artillery, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd United States Regular Artillery. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful services to his country".
