Eliza Perkins and Major Burke met at Fort Moultrie near Charleston, SC when Eliza's second husband David Perkins served there. They corresponded for several years after the deaths of both of their spouses at Fort Moultrie. Eventually, they married in 1861 and moved to New York City.
