Herman Carl Plate was born in Germany to Heinrich and Elizabeth Plate. He immigrated to the US in 1886 and became a naturalized citizen by 1889. He married Anna Hoffman, a German immigrant, in Scott County, Iowa, on December 25, 1889. The couple made their home in Cass County, Iowa, on a 30 acre stock farm. They had two daughters, Edith and Minnie. Anna died on September 2, 1893, leaving Herman with his two young daughters to raise.

He married Anna 'Annie' Reimers in 1895. Anna came to the marriage with a son, Edward, and in 1901 gave birth to daughter Maude Nellie. The family resided on Herman's 30 acre farm until his death in February 1914, less than a year after his daughter Minnie's marriage to Joseph Klemish. Annie and Maude remained in Cass County while Maude finished school. Edith and Maude became registered nurses and never married. Edward farmed and retired in California, and Minnie lived a long life to age 99, had 5 children, and lived in and around Cass County, Iowa her entire life.
