After graduating from high school, Billie was employed at a lumber yard with his father. He inherited his father's talent with woodworking, as well as learning more of the skill from him.
When WWll began, Billie joined the Navy, spending the duration of his enlistment in the Pacific theater.
Upon his return to the States, Billie returned to the Mineral Wells, TX area, went back to work at the lumber yard, and proceeded to buy a ranch outside of Millsap, TX. He built a three bedroom home on that property, in addition to barns and other outbuildings, cattle pens and planted a 20 acre peach orchard.
In addition to the work involved in growing and selling produce, Billie also maintained a herd of about 20 cows—his "girls", to whom he was very partial.
Billie lived a full live, enjoying a week of vacation each year with a childhood friend, exploring all parts of Texas, hunting and maintaining close relationships with his sisters.
