Betty Denton Fustenberger of Clinton, 62, a retired English instructor at Hinds Community College, died Jan. 8 at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Fustenberger Services were Jan. 10 at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park. A lifelong resident of Jackson, Betty received her B.A. from Millsaps in 1964, where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority and the Theatre Guild. After touring Germany, where she met and married her husband Helmut, she returned to complete her M.A. at Mississippi College. Meanwhile, she taught English at Forest Hill High School before beginning her long teacher career at Hinds In 1969. Daughter of the late A.L. (Zeus) and Katherine Denton, Betty had grown up on the Raymond campus of Hinds, where her parents taught and lived during their long careers there. Following their lead, Betty taught for more than 30 years at the Raymond campus, where her students remember her at flamboyant and passionate about her calling In teaching. She especially loved teaching British literature, for which she put together a thematic textbook for her classes. Over the years, she had sponsored college clubs and organizations and was named Phi Theta Kappa Instructor of the Year. She was active in the Two-Year College English Association, where she presented papers on civil rights literature and women's studies. In addition, she served as associate editor of the Teaching English in the Two-Year College. "Betty dearly loved her students," said Dr. David Durham, district director of technology and former academic dean at the Raymond campus. "If she had students in a class who needed a hug, she hugged them." English Department chair Peggy Brent said, "Betty will be missed. She was very caring, dedicated and interested in helping her students succeed. She perpetuated her parents' legacy at Hinds because they, too, always had time to help students and faculty." Betty is survived by her husband Helmut Fustenberger of Clinton.

"Betty Furstenberger was a Hinds County girl who went to Europe and was smitten mightily by a dashing young German named Helmut Furstenburger whom she married and brought back to Hinds County. Betty now teaches in the English Department at Hinds Junior College and when the department compiled a collection of recipes titled The Grammatical Gourmet, Betty contributed her favorite, "Le Fruet Estraordinaire."
