The sudden death of Joseph H. Chilcote of Center street, which occurred at the home of his son Herbert of Cleveland, Ohio, shocked this community Wednesday when the news was received announcing the passing of a man who for the past 40 years was one of the town's respected citizens. Leaving here Labor Day to visit his son and apparently enjoying fair health, he was stricken with apoplexy, which caused immediate death. His daughter, Mrs. Estella Clegg, who was rushing to his bedside from her home in Virginia, found her father dead upon arrival in Clearfield and with her brother Herbert accompanied the remains to this city, arriving here Thursday evening, where the body was removed to his late home on Center street.

Mr. Chilcote was born May 7, 1854, in Huntingdon County, and at the time of his death was in his 75th year. For 34 years he was employed at the local plant of the Elk Tanning Company and was one of the company's valued employees. He was a man greatly devoted to his home and family and enjoyed the acquaintanceship of a large number of friends who will morn his sudden death with a feeling of profound sorrow. He was a good neighbor, kind and charitable and never lost an opportunity of lending helpful assistance when the need presented itself. His ambition before returning home was to visit his daughter at her home in Virginia and had made plans for this trip, only to become afflicted before his fond wish could be realized.

Besides his wife, Elmyra Chilcote, he is survived by two children, Herbert of Cleveland and Mrs. Estella Clegg of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The funeral services will be held from his late home on Center street on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with services in charge of Rev. H. E. Rundell, pastor of Curwensville Baptist Church. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The sympathy of the community is extended to the sorrowing family in their sad bereavement.
