Thomas and Samuel were two of the sons of William Lawrence of Flushing and his second wife Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Richard "Bull" Smith, the founder of Smithtown, Long Island, New York. After the death of William Lawrence who left her with seven young children to raise, she married Philip Carteret, the Royal Governor of New Jersey. When he died, she married Richard Townley and had two sons by him.
