He was one of the sons of Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Richard "Bull" Smith the founder of Smithtown, Long Island, and her husband Capt. William Lawrence. Elizabeth was the second wife of Capt. William Lawrence of Flushing, Queens County, New York and they were married by license. William Lawrence died and left Elizabeth Smith with seven young children. The following year she married Philip Carteret, the Royal Governor of New Jersey. She reserved the right in the marriage contract to keep possession of the property of William Lawrence for the benefit of their seven children when she married Philip Carteret on March 26, 1681. They had no children of their own and when he died she married Richard Townley in 1685 and had two sons by him. Those sons were Charles Townley (c. 1686 to 2 Sep 1756) and Effingham Townley.

Thomas and his brother Samuel Lawrence who also died as a teenager were buried in the churchyard here but their graves were eventually covered by an extension of the church. The source for the burial information for the two brothers comes from "The Family of Richard Smith of Smithtown, Long Island" by Frederick Kinsman Smith which was published in 1967 by the Smithtown Historical Society.
